NAPLES: Long-time Collier County Sheriff Don Hunter is calling it quits - he announced Monday he's not running for reelection.

Hunter says it's time for him to move on and maybe venture into the private sector rather than public office.

He says he needs more money for his family's future, and the sheriff's salary of about $140,000 wasn't going to work.

"If you're public service, you're not making top dollar," Hunter said.

He says he made the decision to not run for re-election earlier this year, but waited until now to make the announcement.

With the incumbent out of the running, it opens the door for newcomers to file.

Victor Ortino, a private investigator, filed in March. He says it's not about money.

"I'm doing this to turn the county around. My heart is in it for the county and the people, both the citizens and the deputies," Ortino said.

Just hours after Hunter's news conference, businessman Vincent Angiolillo made his plans official and is willing to take a pay cut.

"Don Hunter's done a good job in a lot of areas. It's fortunate for me that I'm going to have the opportunity to run for sheriff and build on what he has already done and correct some of the other portions that have to be corrected," Angiolillo said.

Ortino and Angiollilo will have tough competition - Hunter is endorsing his undersheriff, Kevin Rambosk, who picked up the paperwork to file this afternoon.

"I definitely have ideas, and would invite everyone to the courthouse steps on Thursday to hear my vision for the future," Rambosk said.

Candidates for the office can file at any time. Qualifying doesn't end until June 2008.
